Tips On How To Start A Conversation

ConversationStarting a successful conversation is an art that is not hard to learn. Like most things in life conversations usually follow a pattern or formula. These tips for making conversation with strangers were meant for you and everyone that wants a little help to get the ball rolling:

1.  Smile.  Everyone is more engaging when they appear friendly and open.

2.  Make eye contact.

3.  Introduce yourself.  A conversation is more likely to start and continue when names are exchanged.

4.  Pick a relevant topic.  It might sound cliche, but it’s always good to bring up the weather.

5.  Share some details.  Tell the other person a little about yourself.

A Quick Guide To E-mail Etiquette

emailElectronic mail.  Who doesn’t love it?  It’s quick, efficient and –let’s be honest — allows us to be somewhat removed from the person on the other end.  But that doesn’t mean you throw professional courtesy and etiquette out the window when using e-mail to communicate with those around you.  In fact, you should pay close attention to your e-mail habits and determine that you are sending the right message with each click of the mouse.  Read on for a few tips on how to keep your e-mail goofs to a minimum:

  • Make sure your subject line is relevant and meaningful to the body of the e-mail.
  • Don’t shout! Remember that using ALL CAPS is shouting your message.  Be respectful and use regular sentence case.
  • Limit your use of the “urgent” tag.  You don’t want to be known as the person whose e-mail is always an emergency.
  • Avoid texting lingo and emoticons.  Spell out words and don’t rely on abbreviations.
  • Avoid long sentences and paragraphs.  Try not to exceed 20 words per sentence.

Having Your Cake And Eating It, Too

“Life itself is the proper binge.”  ~ Julia Child

CakeAuthentic success and worldly success are not mutually exclusive.  Granted, it is easier to achieve them one at a time, but pursuing both is not an impossible dream once you realize the important distinctions between the two.  We need not choose between them.  We must only discern which of the two helps us care for our soul and the souls of those we love, and pursue that one first.

The Bible tells us we cannot serve two masters — God and money.  But what about having your cake and eating it, too?  On this, the scripture is silent.  Actually, it’s quite possible to eat and have, provided you bake two cakes at the same time.  Any cook knows that doubling the amount of your batter is no big deal.  But going into the kitchen to bake a second cake after you’ve baked and iced your first and washed the dirty dishes requires a tremendous amount of psychic and physical energy.  That’s why you need to double your dreams when you conceive them.  Doubling the size of your dream creates space for a lifestyle based on authentic success, but it can be iced with as much worldly success as you are willing to pay for the coin of life.  Some of us like sweets more than others.

“Success is important only to the extent that it puts one in a position to do more things one likes to do.” Sarah Caldwell tells us.  I love baking cakes.  How about you?
