Get Your Employees Motivated and Productive

Who doesn’t want employees that are more productive in the workplace?  Yet personal issues, illness and family obligations often prevent employees from coming in.  That’s why so many employers are now enabling remote access to their network.

Whether you call it “working from home,” “virtual office,” or  “telecommuting,” the idea is the same; your network is configured to give you and your staff the ability to work from some location other than the office.

While telecommuting will not work in every situation, there is no doubt that technology has made working from home extremely practical whether a few times a month or every week.  As a matter of fact, offering work-from-home options can give you a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining the best employees.  Here are some additional benefits to allowing your people remote access:

  • Employees who are sick can continue to work without infecting the office or losing an entire day of work
  • Employees forced to stay home to take care of sick family members can continue to work instead of taking off long periods.
  • Inclement weather or heavily congested traffic won’t shut down your office.
  • Key managers with a heavy workload will actually be more productive if given the ability to work from home on evening and weekends.
  • Allowing employees flexibility during peak workloads (e.g., your accounting staff during tax season or periodic reporting dates) makes employees happier to put in the extra hours from a home office.
  • Employees with temporary or permanent disabilities can continue to be fully functional in a home environment.

How to Get Started With a Telecommuting Program

First, make sure you have a telecommuting policy.  Second, make sure that systems are in place to adequately support telecommuting.  There are several options for remotely accessing your network, however, there are two primary ways used by most.  They are:

Do What You Love and the Money Will Follow – Or So They Say

“Do what you love and the money will follow.” ~ Marsha Sinetar

I love the optimism of this quotation, and for the most part, I believe it’s true.  If you’ve not read Marsha Sinetar’s book (by the same title), she can make a believer out of you as well.  Her book is a practical and inspirational primer on getting your passion to pay off.

Marsha Sinetar is not the first to advise us along these lines.  One of Buddha’s main steps for achieving enlightenment, for example, is discovering your right livelihood.  And at the other end of the spectrum, John D. Rockefeller believed that the power to make money was a gift from God, which is simply another way of saying, “Do what you love and the money will follow.”

But still we ask:  Does it really?

Yes. But not the way you’re used to getting it.  First, unless you win the lottery, the money usually doesn’t come all at once, especially in the beginning.  Second, the money will come from unexpected sources.  But it will come and here’s why.  When you start following your true path and passion, you’re finally using your talents and skills that are more natural to you.  Imagine doing something that is forced and unenjoyable.  Do you think you’ll put your best efforts into it?  Trust me, doing what you love does eventually lead to the ATM.  But you might have a few detours before you get there.

Valuable Gifts for New Entrepreneurs, Part 2

I posted Valuable Gifts For New Entrepreneurs just before the holidays last year.  Well, I’m posting a Part 2, just in case you’re already thinking of starting your holiday list early.   I know, we’re in the middle of summer and Christmas is not exactly what we think of especially if it’s 103 degrees outside.  But, hey, you don’t have to wait for the holidays to give someone special who just started his/her small biz.  Here are more ideas on what to give a new entrepreneur:

1. Pocket HD Camcorder

Pocket HD, USB-enabled video cameras are at the top of a lot of people’s lists. Some uses for them are video blogging, recording presentations or simply adding some personality to your website by addressing things on camera rather than text. Whatever it’s for, no entrepreneur should be without one to capture all of the fun, excitement and ideas that happen daily. There are a bunch of options these days.  Flip Video basically invented the under $200 video camera, and of the five versions now offered, the original Flip Ultra (affiliate link) is still my favorite, thanks to its low price, intuitive controls, and easy uploading.

2. Air Card

Not a must but still a fun gift. They work great and it’s not something a bootstrapping entrepreneur will probably invest in on their own so that makes it a really cool gift.

Discovering What You’d Like to Do If you Ever Had the Time

Spending regular time alone just to collect your thoughts seems like indulgence.  Spending time alone to nurture your vision, to express yourself creatively, to enjoy a personal pursuit that brings  you contentment and pleasure will seem — well , impossible.  Incredulous.  Impractical.  Inconceivable.  Out of the question.

“Right.  In another life,” is the usual response, along with the audible sighs and the rolling of eyes when I raise the topic with a group of women I occasionally have lunch with.  Then wistful looks appear.  “You mean to have fun?” the women want to know.

“Yes.  Have fun.”

“You mean, by myself.”

“Yes, by yourself.  Fun.  What would you like to do if you ever had the time?”

“Fun?”

Respond Rather Than React

It’s amazing how quickly a positive attitude can be shut down by a few bad experiences and negative thoughts, isn’t it?  That’s why it’s so important to monitor your attitude and respond rather than react.

When you respond, you make a positive and constructive mental adjustment.  When you react, it’s purely emotional and rarely does anything to improve the situation; often it makes it worse.

Negative thoughts are going to creep into your mind.  The key is to be prepared with a game plan that responds offensively and defensively rather than one that merely reacts.  Choosing to respond instead of reacting helps you stay in control of your attitude and your life.  It’s the difference between having an attitude that sends you flying out the door eager and excited each morning and having an attitude that keeps you under the covers hitting the snooze alarm.

A few key thoughts:

  • Watch out for negative inputs.  The loudest voice you hear is your own.
