Consistently changing payroll tax laws and general tax uncertainty are paralyzing small businesses. If Washington doesn't help business owners gain some clarity around tax and health care costs then this downturn in the economy will continue on even longer. Many business owners simply want to know that there are no more surprises around the corner as coming out of D.C.

These are all helpful tips you've got here I couldn't agree more. I specially like #2 Ask if not sure. If you may I will just add two, in my POV are important in Customer Service;

ON PHONE: Verbal cues like “Uh Huh”, “Really?”, or just repeating a key word can help.

IN PERSON: In addition to the verbal skills already mentioned, this conversation provides the opportunity for non-verbal communication like a head nod, leaning in to show interest, or even a smile to help the speaker continue.

Maria,

Nice insight into pricing. It's a common issue for small businesses. I agree with your suggestions.

Preach on my sister in labor. I know exactly how you feel. I had so many aspirations when I entered the work force. I was taught by my parents to be an excellent worker. Always make your boss look good. I remember when I went into the navy, I got the promotions but i also got the work load. One day I asked my chief why he always gave me the lion share of the work load, while other slacked off. He told me that I was dependable, reliable, and hard worker that he could count on to get the job done right. I was a "that a boy"..... the others were not. I was a shipmate but the slackers were ship wrecks. and now being under staffed and over loaded at work my body cannot handle nor does my mind want to handle the lion's share of the work load to make my boss look good. I long for the boring do nothing job were the are no decisions My aspirations now are to be the 3rd shift janitor.

[...] Tax cuts and hiring boost small business. Forget the constant insistence, especially among U.S. leaders that somehow the real problem with the economy was not enough debt. Washington has pushed initiatives in the belief that increased lending to small businesses would lead to economic recovery. However, it turns out simple tax cuts and increased hiring do a better job.
