Leverage your website to improve your sales

Front StoreRegardless of your industry or the size of your business, you can leverage you website to find more new customers, serve your existing customers and convert more leads to sales. Here are some answers to some of our customers questions that will help you put the web to work for your business.

I’m a local automobile mechanic. My business has done fine for years based on word-of-mouth, but I keep hearing from everyone, “Why don’t you have a website?” Why do I need a website?
Consumers have adopted the Internet as a daily research tool much faster than many experts even predicted. Sure, some of your new customers will continue to find you via word-of-mouth. However, when a potential customer is trying to find mechanics in your area, many of them will turn to the Internet vs. looking in a phone book. If you don’t have a web site and a presence online, those potential customers will find your competitors that do have websites.

I want to maximize any type of e-commerce opportunities out there. Currently, I sell several locally made products on my website, and I have many repeat customers buying my products. What else could I be selling via my site?
Do you have an eye-catching logo or tag phrase for your web business? If so, there’s an easy way for you to sell more. Currently, there are several online services that give you the power to create T-shirts, coffee mugs, and many other items adorned with your logo or tag phrase and sell them on your site. And the best part of services such as Cafepress (www.cafepress.com) is that you don’t have to buy a bunch of T-shirts upfront and hope that they’ll be successful. They’ll print and ship a T-shirt or coffee mug only after you’ve received an order.

Some of my competitors have started blogs, but all they keep writing about is their business. It seems very self serving to me. What’s the value in creating a blog on my website?

Gifts for GeeksThe holiday season has arrived and it’s time to gift your favorite geek. If you’re an uber-geek without many friends, you can also gift yourself! Here is the annual Geek Gift Guide!

  1. iPad. Absolutely the most popular vendor booth giveaway of the 2010 events season. If you didn’t win one – it’s now time to “gift” an iPad to yourself and your loved ones.
  2. Windows 7 phone. You’ve come a long way baby! Stop by your local or online Microsoft Store and take a look. New and improved have never been more relevant.
  3. New Kindle or Nook Color. The new Kindle is about half the price of the original with much better “lighting” to increase readability. The Nook Color has a nifty screen resolution.  Yes, the screen has glare and can make your eyes tired after prolonged use, but then reading the National Geographic magazine in full color has wowed me.  Rumor has it that one of the boxes under the tree with my name on it contains an an e-reader.  Perhaps a new Kindle or a Nook Color?  I’m not picky and will take either one.

Work Your Plan!

However you define success is up to you.  But one thing’s for sure: success just doesn’t happen overnight – you have to have a plan and then start working your plan in a consistent and disciplined manner.  If you’re in a bike, for example, you need to start pedaling to reach your destination.  You just don’t pedal once or twice,  you need to do it consistently or you’ll lose your balance and fall.

Once a reasonable plan is made, immediately implement it.  Acting quickly is an imperative for your business.  Don’t get me wrong, do think things through carefully.  But be careful to avoid excessive reasoning and  “paralysis analysis” that often hinders you to move forward.  Get things going fast, and then as you go along, make some “corrections and adjustments” if necessary.

None of us are particularly fond of rude surprises.   Not fun!  Don’t wait until the the estimated completion dates to see if you’ve reached your goals.  Schedule frequent progress checks, meet with people or teams involved to measure the task status and updates.  At those meetings, discuss the following:

  • Is each goal still legitimate and achievable?
  • Where are we in terms of reaching each goal?
  • Have any situations or conditions changed since we originally set each goal?
  • Do we need to make any changes to our goals, our action plans, or our performance levels?

The answers to these questions provide the acumen we need to steer us in taking our important mission to reality.
