Plan for Pleasure As Well As Pain

Bored_Pain

Listen, working for a living is always going to be a mixed bag.  The higher up you go the more true this is. As a lowly file clerk, way back when, I got used to being bored, ticked off, frustrated, idle, and quite frankly, sick of the job.    By the time I had risen to be an HR division manager, I was strangely surprised to find myself also bored, ticked off, frustrated, idle and sick of the job.  But whereas when I was starting out I didn’t expect any different, by the time I had risen to the heights I was totally unprepared for the same feelings.  I guess I expected every day to be exciting, utterly challenging, demanding, dramatic (well, I admit –  I had experienced many days of drama, being in HR), cutting-edge stuff.  And when it wasn’t, I was – I suppose  – disappointed.

Later, of course, I realized that not every day can be fantastic.  Some days will be blah.  Some days will be adrenaline-filled and exciting  – but not as many will be boring.  You have to be prepared for the pain and the pleasure.  You have to adjust your expectation so that you don’t get ticked off when it is boring, and don’t explode with pleasure when it is too exciting for words.

Trouble is, if it is boring, you might be tempted, as indeed I have been many times, to liven it up a bit by being disruptive.  It’s best  to sit on your hands and let the feeling pass.  As a manager or a business owner, you aren’t allowed to be disruptive – except in an innovative way of course.

“The secret of success is learning how to use pain and pleasure instead of having pain and pleasure use you. If you do that, you’re in control of your life. If you don’t, life controls you.”  Tony Robbins

I Bid Adieu to My Fast Metabolism

Bye-bye to my fast metabolismRight before Christmas 2009, I posted a tweet asking for a moment of silence in memory of my fast metabolism.  A few of my twitter followers extended sympathies while others thought it was all too funny.  Not all of you knew my metabolism, but it was an unbelievably fast machine that let me inhale anything I wanted while all of you with normal burn rates looked on, incredulous.  I once caught an ex-boyfriend calling me a “gulper” after I’d whipped up a Big Breakfast and a pancake and sausage meal at McDonald’s.  But you see, that was decades ago.

I never realized how much I owed my metabolism.  It was the loyalest of friends, it let me toss down eggs Benedicts for breakfast, a double cheeseburger for lunch and half a pan of lasagna for dinner. Oh and a Fanta Blue Raspberry Slurpee that same night if I wanted to.

Although I loved my metabolism, I had no idea how unusual it was until a few months ago when it completely left me.  I noticed there was a jibble around my hips and blobs of back fat around my bra.  At first I thought the metabolism might simply be on vacation somewhere in the Caribbean.  But one day my scale registered a number I’d never seen before, and I knew my trusted old friend is gone, dead, not gonna be back.

I’d like to finish this eulogy by apologizing to all of you in the pews, I never truly understood the fury you felt when last night’s pasta dinner appeared on  your hips the next morning.  I pretended to empathize but, hey, I really didn’t get it until now! I’ve had to increase my exercise sessions to five a

Health is Wealth. . . Learn to Manage it Well

health_wealthI think it’s safe to say that we all strive to live a better life.  We try to manage our personal and professional life and somehow do our best to create some balance.  We love to take care of our loved ones, our customers, our bosses.  But one thing that we certainly neglect from time to time is to take care of ourselves.  Health, after all, is something that we cannot take for granted.  Well, not for long.  Without our health, we definitely, lose the ability to take care of all those things that we think are all so important.  Remember that health is wealth.

It’s easy to put off managing your health.  Do it soon, though.  In fact, do it right now.  Learn to manage your health.  The general advice follows:
