The 5 Goals of a Project Manager

As a Project Manager, you need to manage people, money, suppliers, equipment—the list is never ending. The trick is to be focused. Set yourself 5 personal goals to achieve. If you can meet these simple goals for each project, then you will achieve total success. So read on, to learn…

The 5 Goals of a Project Manager

These goals are generic to all industries and all types of projects. Regardless of your level of experience in project management, set these 5 goals for every project you manage.

Goal 1: To finish on time

This is the oldest but trickiest goal in the book. It’s the most difficult because the requirements often change during the project and the schedule was probably optimistic in the first place.

To succeed, you need to manage your scope very carefully. Implement a change control process so that any changes to the scope are properly managed.

Always keep your plan up to date, recording actual vs. planned progress. Identify any deviations from plan and fix them quickly.

Goal 2: To finish under budget

To make sure that your project costs don’t spiral, you need to set a project budget at the start to compare against. Include in this budget, all of the types of project costs that will accrue, whether they are to do with people, equipment, suppliers or materials. Then work out how much each task in your plan is going to cost to complete and track any deviations from this plan.

Are You Afraid of Success?

AfraidNo one wants to fail.  Fear of failure is common, even immobilizing people, hindering them from pursuing or achieving their goals.  But for some, success is an even greater source of fear, also resulting in inaction.

It’s rare that a goal is all roses. Success requires change, and change has both positive and negative consequences. Often while people claim to want to succeed at something, the reality is that the negatives outweigh the positives for them.  When that happens, we abandon the idea altogether.

“A fear of success is an expression of inadequacy in believing we don’t deserve to achieve, combined with emotions of guilt when we do better than expected,”  says Denis Waitley, speaker, author, and productivity coach.

When you don’t really believe in the validity of your dreams and you aren’t prepared for achievement, you will fall short again and again, says Waitley.  “I call this the curse of permanent potential.”

Having Your Cake And Eating It, Too

“Life itself is the proper binge.”  ~ Julia Child

CakeAuthentic success and worldly success are not mutually exclusive.  Granted, it is easier to achieve them one at a time, but pursuing both is not an impossible dream once you realize the important distinctions between the two.  We need not choose between them.  We must only discern which of the two helps us care for our soul and the souls of those we love, and pursue that one first.

The Bible tells us we cannot serve two masters — God and money.  But what about having your cake and eating it, too?  On this, the scripture is silent.  Actually, it’s quite possible to eat and have, provided you bake two cakes at the same time.  Any cook knows that doubling the amount of your batter is no big deal.  But going into the kitchen to bake a second cake after you’ve baked and iced your first and washed the dirty dishes requires a tremendous amount of psychic and physical energy.  That’s why you need to double your dreams when you conceive them.  Doubling the size of your dream creates space for a lifestyle based on authentic success, but it can be iced with as much worldly success as you are willing to pay for the coin of life.  Some of us like sweets more than others.

“Success is important only to the extent that it puts one in a position to do more things one likes to do.” Sarah Caldwell tells us.  I love baking cakes.  How about you?

Attitude Is Key In Relationship Building

positive-attitude-2Attitude is your most priceless possession, one of your most valuable assets.  To a great extent, it determines the overall quality of your life.

In this climate of uncertainty , I am convinced more than ever that people need to know that having an ongoing positive attitude toward your business associates and customers is key to success.  They assume you’ll give them  a great big “thank you” after you give them a referral or buy your product.  However, do you keep that attitude of gratitude throughout the relationship, in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health?

Achieve True Connection By Listening

ListeningIf you are to make a list of the country’s most influential people, who would you include?  For sure, President Obama would make that list.  So would Warren Buffett and perhaps Steve Jobs.  You could argue that Sarah Palin to be on it depending on whether you’re a fan or not.  Now there’s one name that you may or may not have considered:  Oprah Winfrey.

Her success was hugely attributed to her ability to talk.  But Oprah did more of her share of listening.  The application of her ability to listen is obvious on her television show  She is constantly observing and listening to find issues to address on the air.  When she brings experts, celebrities, and authors on her show, she genuinely listens to what they have to say.  Oprah’s listening ability has rewarded her with incredible success and influence.
